copy error

Can someone point me in the right direction to figure out
what's wrong here?
I'm trying to copy a very simple DB between two servers
using the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager DB Copy Wizard. All
steps looks good up to detaching the source DB, but then
the actual copy of the share database mdf file to the
destination server fails. The Error Code in the Task
Detail box is 'failed'. The Error Code in the Step Detail
box is '-2147467259'.

copy databse to another server

Hello,,

I backed up my database and it created a BAK file. Now I move this file to other server and trying to restore from it. It is giving me error: Device activation error. Do I have to create database before restoring. I do not have this database available in other server and I need to copy database with all constrains and tables.

Thanks,

no you do not have to create teh database first...
the .bak file sounds corrupted...
back up the db again only this time check the box to validate/verify the file.
HTH,
SQLPoet|||Create the backup and take the .bak file and paste it in the Backup subfolder in Microsoft SQL Server folder under programs before going into Enterprise manager and use the backup and restore wizard and choose the restore from device option. Hope this helps.sqlsql

Copy database wizard. Invalid column name 'AccountCode'

I've been trying the copy database wizard for hours, each time getting one error or another. The most recent one is "Invalid column name 'AccountCode'". In the error message it tells me to change the MaximumErrorCount - I can't find any information on how to do that.

I'm using VPN to access the source server. The source is SQL Server 2000 from the client's server. The destination is SQL Server 2005 from the MSDN Premium subscription. The username has every server role checked. Part of the transfer is successful. I'm using SMO instead of Attach & Detach.

What's wrong with 'AccountCode'?

How do I change MaximumErrorCount in the SQL Server Management studio?

TIA

Mike

what is service pack applied on this machine. is there any particular reason you are going for copy database wizards. have u tried Backup/restore or dettach/attach method. You apply sp2 for sqlserver 2005 and try CDW

Madhu

|||

I applied SQL Server SP2 as part of my attempts to get it working yesterday. The OS is XP and has had XP SP 2 for a while.

I tried the backup / restore yesterday and the database was created but I could not see any tables, views, sp, etc. I just now I tried it again but this time I checked the "Overwrite existing database" selection and it seems to have worked just fine this time.

So I'm good to go now - I still don't know why CDW didn't work. I had deleted the database each time I tried it yesterday so it couldn't be that.

Thanks for the reply. At least it got me to try the restore option again.

Copy Database Wizard Timeout Error

Hi,

I am copying a database from one server to the other. Both have SQL 2005. When using the CDW, I get the following error after 10 minutes:

Event Name: OnError

Message: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

StackTrace: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ServerConnection.ExecuteWithResults(String sqlCommand)

at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ServerConnection.ExecuteWithResults(StringCollection sqlCommands)

at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.TransferObjectsTask.TransferObjectsTask.TransferDatabasesUsingSMOTransfer()

InnerException-->Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.

It always errors at 10 minutes. But, when I run the Create Database statement from my query analyzer, it works and it takes about 18 minutes.

How do I get the CDW to wait longer than 10 minutes before returning an error?

I have set my remote query timeout to 20 minutes and that didn't seem to have any effect.

Thanks,

Have you installed Service PAck 2? CDW is much improved.

Download SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 at:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/downloads/servicepacks/sp2.mspx

...probably doesn't matter but the job runs on the destination server so it timeouts are relevent they may need to be set on that server.

|||

We have greatly improved SMO transfer in CDW with Service Pack 2. I strongly suggest you try that. Also, you could try using the detach/attach method instead of SMO Transfer. I believe it is faster and more reliable.

After installing Service Pack 2, please let us know if your problem persists. You may still have to change some settings on your server.

if you use Detach/attach method you still need to migrate the Login from Source Server. You can also try Backup/Restore method which is best in such scenario. in this method also the Logins has to be taken care.

COPY database wizard error

When I try to copy a SQL Server 2005 database to the same server, the Copy
database wizard always gets an error at the very end. It says "User
'abcuser' does not exist or you don't have permissions". 'abcuser' is a SQL
Server user that we no longer use because it wouldn't work for our
application anymore once we restored into SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server
2000. We can't delete 'abcuser' because its says it is an owner. We can't
change the owner to another user either. The copy process yields a new copy
of the database, BUT we can't see any tables, can't add users, etc. because
it says we don't have premissions. Throughout the COPY database wizard we
used Windows Authentication when asked.
Question: is there a known bug when restoring from SQL Server 2000 in terms
of users? Is there any way to copy this database even though it has this
rogue user?
Thanks!

Why can't you change the owner?
It sounds like you are not a sysadmin on the SQL 2005 system?

Have you tried detatch/attach or backup/restore?

There's a simple fix for the 'abcuser' problem that started this whole
mess. Go to the original server, look at the syslogins table, and make
note of the "sid" that is assigned to the 'abcuser' login. Create a
login on your new server, named 'abcuser', and assign it the same "sid"
that it had on the original server. This will resolve the original
problem that you had after restoring the database.
Once that's resolved, stop using the Copy Database Wizard. If you want
to clone a database, do a backup/restore, making sure to use the WITH
MOVE option on the restore command to create new data files for the
restored database. Much faster and more straightforward than that
wizard contraption.

note of the "sid" that is assigned to the 'abcuser' login. Create a
login on your new server, named 'abcuser', and assign it the same "sid"
that it had on the original server. This will resolve the original
problem that you had after restoring the database.
Once that's resolved, stop using the Copy Database Wizard. If you want
to clone a database, do a backup/restore, making sure to use the WITH
MOVE option on the restore command to create new data files for the
restored database. Much faster and more straightforward than that
wizard contraption.

Question: is there a known bug when restoring from SQL Server 2000 in terms
of users? Is there any way to copy this database even though it has this
rogue user?

Copy Database Wizard Error

I am trying to

copy a database from our company's external SQL

Server(production) to our local SQL

Server(development). The Copy Database wizard fails on the step

"Execute SQL Server Agent Job".
Following is the error in the log file.. Please advise

InnerException-->An

error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When

connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact

that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote

connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not

open a connection to SQL Server)

Have you verified that both servers have the remote connections allowed. Have a look at this KB Article. Remember that Remote connections is turned off by default on new installes of sql server 2005.

|||Do you know how I can set SQL Server2005 to allow remote connections on a cluster?

Copy Database Wizard

Hello, I am trying to copy my database tables and stored procedures to my local machine. I keep gettin gthis error
CDW Error Message

X "Your SQL Server Service is running under the local system account. You need to change you SQL Server Sevice account to have the rights to copy files over the network."

What do I do to correct this?

Thanks,
EricAre you working in a controlled environment ??
Active Directory and so ??
If that is so, you need to be system admin in the network to be able to copy those files ...|||The local System account only has permissions to run proggys on the local machine, to do any networkable actions the SQL Server needs to be run under an account that is able to have permissions added to it.

What You should do when createing or installing a SQL Server is to create another account for it to run under. If you are working in a domain You would create a domain account that is a member of the domain users group, and has the add permissions to log on as a service. Then increase the permissions as needed. Now if you want to use SQL Mail you need to do the above so that you can add a mail profile to the server so that the user can send emails (SQLServer mail uses the MAPI system same as Outlook).

If you are in a workgroup, create a local user and add the log on as service permissions. then on the other machines that it needs to talk to you would add the user.|||Is it at all possible to get instructions on how this can happen. Even if I have to uninstall Sql server and re-install it. I need to copy the Database to my local machine.|||Are you just trying to copy it once, or do you want this to be a regular job.
